What is Sedation Dentistry?

At our dental office, we understand that some patients can feel anxious during procedures. That’s why we offer Sedation Dentistry, which involves using medication to help you feel relaxed. While it’s sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” most patients are actually awake during the procedure. Only patients under general anesthesia are completely unconscious. Our Buford Dentist provides minimum to moderate sedation depending on your anxiety level. This means you’ll remain awake but comfortable throughout the process. We’re here to make sure you have a stress-free dental experience!

Types Of Sedation Dentistry Offered

In addition to local anesthetic, following sedation techniques may be used by our Buford Dentist to help fearful patients relax:

  • Nitrous Oxide (better known as laughing gas) – A form of mild sedation administered by a mask worn over the nose. The dentist controls the amount of sedation allocated, and the gas often wears off rapidly. This only type of anesthesia may allow you to drive home after the surgery.
  • Oral sedation – Typically a Valium or Halcion pill usually taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, although you’ll still be awake. To produce moderate sedation, a larger dose may be given. Some people actually fall asleep from moderate oral sedation, but they usually can be awakened with a gentle shake

Putting off necessary dental treatment will only lead to more dental problems and the need for more intensive procedures down the line.
